Belgian SME Global Leader in improving Cancer Therapy

An R&D-driven company with unique capabilities and product range, Orfit Industries seeks to further strengthen its position on the world markets

Wijnegem (Anvers), October 1, 2010 - Until recently, it looked as if Orfit Industries, based at Wijnegem (Antwerp) was one of Belgium’s best-kept secrets.  True, this designer and manufacturer of medical devices is very well known to those who directly need its products and services: medical doctors, hospitals and healthcare workers throughout the world. But countless people in 65 countries have benefited and still are benefiting unknowingly every day from the technology and services offered by Orfit Industries in the areas of radiation oncology, splinting and prosthetics.

The company contributes actively to the improvement of cancer therapy. For radiation therapy to be as effective as possible, potential changes in the patient’s position have to be minimal. Orfit’s high precision Efficast^® masks restrict movement to the golden standard of less than 2 millimetres. With the Efficast^® Hybrid masks bringing down the movement restriction to even less than1.5 millimetres, Orfit Industries is clearly ahead of competition.

Today, Orfit is also known worldwide as the manufacturer of top-level low temperature thermoplastic splint materials for physical rehabilitation and high melt temperature thermoplastic sheet materials for prosthetics and orthotics

The company is unique in that it controls the entire R&D, manufacturing and marketing chain from the selection of specialized raw materials, to the development of new materials and specifications (the compounds used in the extrusion process are all made in-house). Also, all post-extrusion production steps are performed in-house (die-cutting, perforating, coating and laser welding). In its search for perfection, Orfit Industries continuously strives to improve existing products or proactively develops new ones to meet the patients’ needs.

“It is our job to bring innovation to the market, with a clear understanding of the customer’s needs, the patient’s comfort and the requirements of the authorities,” asserts Steven Cuypers, the company’s Chief Executive.  Annually the company spends up to 15% of sales on R&D, roughly five times the target set by the Lisbon Treaty.
