Splinting with Orfit materials: Circumferential elbow orthosis from Aquafit NS (Orfit Natural NS) 3.2mm
Splinting Techniques: Video 5 of 10
For this week’s episode of Splinting Thursdays, we want to show you a circumferential elbow orthosis made from Orfit Natural NS or Aquafit 3.2mm.
Posterior elbow orthoses are utilized to immobilize the elbow joint and surrounding tissues to allow for rest and healing, and /or to protect these structures following surgery.
Common diagnoses include the following but are not limited to:
- Ulnar nerve compression at the cubital tunnel
- Tendon transfers for wrist and digits
- Biceps tendon repair
- Dislocations and fractures
- Tendinitis
- Arthritis
This orthosis can also limit forearm rotation. The circumferential elbow orthosis is an excellent method to obtain a highly conforming orthosis without excess material at the elbow flexion crease. This method of splint fabrication eliminates the need for darts and padding over the medial and lateral epicondyles.
The same method of orthotic fabrication can be used for an anterior elbow orthosis which is more commonly applied to restrict elbow flexion or to position an elbow flexion contracture at maximal extension to facilitate lengthening.
